Why is Fortnite Called Fortnite?

Fortnite is a competitive game released in 2017 by Epic Games.  It became popular pretty quickly for its bright colours, its dance emotes, and its use of in-game currency. In more details, Fortnite is a survival game where players fight against each other trying to be the last player standing. The videogame is split into three different modes: Save The World, Battle Royale and Creative but Battle Royale is the most popular one. Although some of you might not be already familiar with Fortnite, we will analyse how Fortnite works in the next blog post about Fornite in the near future.

A Quick Overview of Fortnite’s Growth.

Epic Games doesn’t often offer straight numbers on the Fortnite player count. However, we are able to measure its popularity and growth through secondary resources such as Live Streaming data analytics, Statista and Google Trends.  According to Statista the number of players  has risen since its release in 2017. In Q1 2019, Statista reported 250 million players. In May 2020 there were 350 million, a 100 million more YoY.

Ninja as well as other very popular streamers love to play Fortnite on Twitch and Youtube Gaming.  Indeed, Fornite was the second most watched game on Twitch in December 2020 preceded only by World of Warcraft and followed by League of Legends with over 94 million viewer hours.

Three Different Game Modes

Even if you’re not a Fortnite expert, most luckly you have heard before terms like Battle Royale or V-Bucks. We will talk in more details about how Fornite works in another circumstance: for now, let’s see briefly in the paragraph below what are the Fornite’s game modules.

a. Save the World

In Fortnite Save the World, explore a vast, destructible world as you and other players team up to hold back hordes of monsters. In your fight against these monsters — known as Husks — become stronger by finding loot, crafting weapons, and expanding your collection of Heroes. Build a base and fortify it with traps to keep the Husks at bay! – Epic Games

The game is set on a contemporary Earth, where a worldwide storm has erased 98% of the total population, and Zombie-like creatures have begun attacking survivors. Players take on the role of a Hero, with the task of fighting against The Storm, rescuing Survivors and building structures.

b. Battle Royale

Battle Royale is the most popular among players. There’s no story behind that: 100 players with no weapons have to search them in the island for to fight and survive. Players can play alone or team up forming a squad of four or of two to be the last player standing.

c. Creative Mode

The Fornite Creative mode let’s you create and save your own miniature island maps and Fortnite mini games. Creative mode gives players access to various game in order to create their own unique locations. For exmple, props, building components, landscape features, traps, vehicles, and more. This has been recently launched to the market and it has similiarities to Minecraft.

Where the name Fornite comes from?

Epic Games has not shared any official information about its meaning and how they got its unusual name. However, a number of thories overflow in gaming communities. The first most prevalent theory about its possible motivation are related to the module Save the World. Epic’s original concept for the game, Save the World, centers on surviving in a post-apocalyptic world for 14 days. The term Fortnite appears coming from the term: fortnight: which means a period of two weeks.

The second theory also derived from the Save the World. In this mode, players collect resources, complete objectives and build bases to fight zombies when night falls to ensure the survival. Thus, in Save the World, players must build forts to survive two weeks of nighttime attacks.

A third theory says its name come from a mix of 2 words: Forts + Night = Fortnight. Indeed, the main original goal of the game was building forts mainly at night when new zombies arrive.

With everyone busy playing Fortnite, there’s not a lot of time left to think about where its name come from. At theplay we’ll definitely investigate further to find additional theories 😋
